"Derek, your trainer for today is Kai. He's also a bodybuilder, so he should know fairly well what you require in your workout. Kai, this is Derek. He lives nearby and is thinking of joining. I'll leave you to get his goals and get a potential plan set up. I have someone else to show around now." Sheryl turned back to the front desk where a rather rotund lady had just come in.
For a moment, the woman looked past Sheryl at Derek and Kai. When their eyes met, Derek gave her a big smile and two thumbs up. She grinned back nervously and rushed after Sheryl as she made her way up the stairs. Derek turned back to Kai, who was smirking at him. "What?"
"Oh, nothing," Kai chuckled, his blindingly white teeth standing out against his chocolate skin. "Just a lot of people would be to nervous to interact with strangers like that."
"The gym should be a welcoming place to improve yourself. That's all," Derek shrugged, smirking himself.
Kai nodded. "I fully agree. Now, let's get to work on improving you then." Standing up, Derek finally got a good look at the trainer. He was only a couple inches taller than Derek himself but even with his own extremely impressive 240 pounds of pure muscle, Kai had considerably more muscle. Derek felt his his jaw tense but he'd trained himself to always keep his smile on when he wasn't working out. Or playing poker, as the tensing of his jaw had given him away several times. Kai raised his eyebrow, a glint appearing in his eyes. "Okay. So you're looking to get bigger, I take it. Don't like being smaller then others." Derek felt his smile waver. Kai waved his shock away. "I've seen it several times before. Though I've got to admit, none of them had your level of training at all. It's going to take some work to really get you growing again. Have you hit your plateau yet? Or are you already taking some other help to prevent or get over that?"
Derek shifted uncomfortably. This guy was a lot better than he expected. Both in knowledge and in reading people. "Um, overall, I haven't been able to get much bigger in a while. The scales have been fluctuating around 240 for several months but I haven't had the money to get additional help. Though I guess you have. What's this place pay?"
"Thanks for the complement," Kai chuckled, "but no additional help for me. Just REALLY good genetics. But I hit my plateau years ago and have just been working to maintain since then. I don't want to get any bigger myself and have dedicated myself to helping others get bigger. Though it will likely be rather challenging to help you grow. You'll have to trust me on my guidance. You up for that?"
"I'll give you a couple sessions to see if you're any good," Derek told him.
Kai nodded. "We'll get the membership paperwork filled out after our current session then. If you aren't happy with my program, I'm sure one of the other trainers could take over if you wanted. Now, let's go get your trial session done. We'll figure out what your maxes are and then finish up the session at the buffet."
Derek nodded as Kai headed back to the free weights. Sheryl was just climbing the stairs on the far side of the workout area with the new woman who kept glancing back at them.
"Okay. Typical one rep maxes, bench press, squat, deadlift, etc... Let's get warmed up first." Kai led him to a corner where some yoga matts and balls, foam rollers, TRX cables, and pull up bars were located. Kai used this as a test of Derek's mobility as well. 15 minutes of stretching and mobility testing later, they headed to the bench press. After a warm up set and two more sets of increasing weights, Derek maxed out at 350 pounds. Was next, repeating the process and maxing out at 450. "That's all for today. We'll do the rest tomorrow and then really get into a routine after. Now, let's go grab a bite. You head on up and I'll meet you up there with the membership paperwork."
"Sounds good," Derek panted. He was thankful for all the work he'd already put into his body over the years or else his Jell-O legs would have not even gotten him to the stairs, much less up two flights to the buffet upstairs.
"Welcome!" A man shouted from behind the counter. "New member or are you here with a member? I'll need to see a membership card before I can serve you."
"He's not a member yet, Peter. He's here for the trial session but I have the paperwork here," Kai said, waving the papers in his hand for the cook to see. "Daily menu is on the wall." Kai said, pointing at an electronic screen.
Today's Specialty:
Pasta:
Rotini, Angel Hair, Spaghetti, Macaroni, Fettuccini
Meats:
Steak, Chicken, Shrimp, Crab, Salmon, Beef, Pork
Veggies:
Tomatoes, Spinach, Bell Peppers, Jalapenos, Broccoli,
Cauliflower, Onions, Green Beans, Peas
Sauces:
Alfredo, Marinara, Lo Mein, Garlic Olive Oil, Pesto
"Order up. All made fresh." Kai told him. "Chicken Fettuccini with spinach, onions, tomatoes, bell peppers and Marinara sauce please Peter."
"Coming right up Kai. And you?" He asked Derek.
"I keep expecting to wake up. This place, how does it run at $75 a person a month with things like steak on the menu?"
"Cubed steak. And not by itself. It gets mixed into the daily special, which is pasta today," Peter informed him, "and you will get less steak or crab than you would chicken or pork, due to the prices, but otherwise, don't look a gift horse in the mouth."
Derek glanced between the cook and trainer suspiciously but nodded. "All right. I guess I take what I can get until I have to go somewhere else if necessary."
"That's the spirit!" Kai slapped him on the back. "Now, what are you having?"
"I guess I'll have chicken as well, rotini pasta with Alfredo sauce. Tomatoes, spinach, and broccoli."
"Coming right up." Peter started tossing the ingredients into a second skillet.
"Now, while he's cooking that all up, we can get this paperwork filled out." Kai sat at one of the round tables and spread the papers out in front of him. "To make it easier to keep track of. I always get them mixed up when they're in a pile, so this helps."
"Whatever helps make the job easier." Derek shrugged and took up his seat across the table. His brow furrowed as he tried to pull the chair in. It was rather heavy for a regular chair. "Where'd you find these chairs? They weigh a ton."
"Reinforced steel. Can hold up to 700 pounds."
Derek's furrowed brow turned into a raised eyebrow. "700 pounds? No one weighs 700 pounds. Especially not bodybuilders and powerlifters."
"We're a gym for everyone, not just bodybuilders and powerlifters. Some people do get rather large, but we're here to help however we can, whether that's getting bigger like yourself or losing weight, like I suspect that lady earlier would like to do."
"Wouldn't a free buffet be a temptation for them?"
"I can answer that," Peter said, placing their plates on the table in front them. "The gym has different options depending on your goal. Some options limit it for the person so they can only have a certain amount. Those limits can be based on the actual serving size or amount of calories. But I'm thinking someone like you is probably not going to be taking our smaller serving options? Shall I start on a second portion for you?"
"Oh, um, let me try this first. And should probably fill out my membership first."
Peter clicked his tongue and pointed a finger gun at him. "Right. I'll let you two get that done. Give me a yell if you want anymore." He backed to a chair by the kitchen doorway and plopped himself down as he pulled out his phone.
Kai handed him the first page. "That's just basic gym rules. Be a decent person, don't steal equipment, put things away when done. You know. The usual gym etiquette stuff. I don't think you need to read those as they are the usual things you'd see at any gym. Just sign at the bottom." Derek nodded and signed where directed and Kai slid the next paper over. "This page is optional. It's permission for the gym to use pictures taken of your progress for promotional use. Completely optional, both for taking the progress pics and the gym's usage. That section," he pointed at a bullet point list on the second half of the page, "is what the gym would use it for."
"I'll take the progress pics but would rather not have my pictures used as promotional material."
"Fair enough. Sign right there then," Derek signed two lines and took the next page. "A list of the benefits of being a member here. You can bring one friend with you per session and any extras outside the named benefits will cost the regular price. Nothing to sign there." He slid the next page over. "This is the payment page. Self-explanatory. Just fill it out like directed." Derek finished filling out the pages and handed the needed ones back. Kai straightened the papers. "Okay. Now, lets dig in and enjoy. We can talk special plans while we eat and take your first progress pics tomorrow. And once we're done, we can get you your membership card so you can get the standard supplements."
Derek nodded as he pulled his plate over. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
