It was only when a smoky scent wafted past her that Melona finally broke free of her own thoughts and recognized her surroundings. And the moment she did, a shiver ran down her spine. In her wandering, she had ignored the usual warning signs and stumbled straight into Wenkletowne's Ruby district. While the city was normally quite safe, it wasn't completely free of wrongdoing, and in it's rapid growth many older districts had fallen by the wayside, the Ruby District in particular being especially overlooked. Because of this it had quickly become a haven for those who, for whatever reasons, wanted to exist outside the purvue of law enforcement. Rumor had it this was the place to go to find anything outside the current systems, from assassins to forbidden magics to illegal substances of any and all kinds. And those from the district were known to have a particular disdain for students of the Academy.
I need to leave, now!!! Melona internally cried, all of her self-loathing practically blasted away by the overwhelming fear of what could happen to her here. Especially if it was found out what family she was from. Sure, she highly doubted her father would care enough or her mother would be smart enough to navigate ransom payments if she were taken hostage, but the people here probably didn't know that. She turned on her heel, ready to race out of the district... Only to realize she had no idea where she was or how to get back to the school. Melona cursed her rotten luck. Of course she would somehow be able to wander this deep into the district without getting into trouble, and knowing how things typically panned out for her, there was no way she would be able to just wander back out. As terrifying as the prospect was, Melona would need to find a way to get directions back to the school, or at least somewhere to hide out until it was light again and the guards did their morning rounds. While it was no secret the guards here weren't known for being morally upstanding, she had decent odds of not being messed with if only because of how plain and poor she was.
She took stock of her surroundings, knowing it would best to decide where to go as quickly as possible, and decided to take her chances at...
