Untested Supplments: The Key for Self-Improvement

Layla produced an opaque spray bottle from a nearby drawer and handed it to Melona. "Try this."

Melona reflexively accepted the bottle from Layla. "What--what is it?"

Layla mulled over her answer before speaking. "It's basically a spray-on conditioner, but it's also got some alchemical supplements in there. They're supposed to have a sort of therapeutic effect," she said.

"Supplements?" asked Melona. "What kind?" She had noticed that the bottle was a pale pink color and completely unlabeled. That didn't really inspire confidence.

Layla laughed. "Sweetie, I'm not an alchemist. All I know is that when my richer clients come in with a major problem, this helps it go away."

Melona's heart sank when she heard the word "richer" and read in between the lines. "How much is this gonna cost?"

Layla shook her head. "Nothing. At least, not right now. Just try it out for a week. If it works, we can work out a payment plan, alright?"

That sounded generous and suspicious, but Melona didn't see a reason to distrust Layla. She knew enough about Melona to know that having Melona in her debt couldn't be all that valuable of a thing. Melona took a deep breath, held it for a second, and let it out as she spoke.

"Okay," she said. "Are there any instructions?"

Layla shrugged. "I mean, it's conditioner. Spray it on once a day and let it work its magic."

Melona nodded and stood up. "Thank you, Layla. I don't know if this'll help, but..."

"It will," Layla promised.

An hour or so later, Melona was sitting in her dorm room, staring at the bottle of conditioner.

"Just once a day," she said to herself. Layla sounded pretty certain that, whatever this thing was, it would be a cure for her ills. But by that same token, the whole thing struck her as fishy. Why wouldn't Layla just explain what this thing was supposed to be?
