My name is Jo Throne. It used to be short for Joseph; now, it is short for Joanna. I am an average 17-year-old, just graduating from high school. I have a 19 year old sister, Jessica, and a single mother, Jade, who are both YouTube video game critics and creators. With millions of followers, and hundreds of contracts with advertisers, they have amassed a fortune. As for myself, I was a YouTube story teller. I narrated stories for a modest fee to give books and book series more exposure to potential buyers. I was doing quite well, with just as many followers and advertisers, to the surprise of my family.
What caused my transformation into a woman began with a simple sore throat and a rapid loss of weight. It was not much, about five pounds; but as it happened over the weekend, it was enough to cause worry. I was taken to the emergency room, where a number of tests were conducted, before the ER doctor approached us with an unreadable expression.
"Do you have any news for us, doctor?" Worried, Mom asked.
The doctor sighed. "Ms Thorne, have you all been given a flu shot recently?"
We turned to each other, confused, before I spoke up. "Just me; why? What happened?"
The doctor gave me a sympathetic look. "I am sorry; but there was a double blind experiment involving an experimental drug that was promised to cure any and all ailments."
The color ran from all of our faces before Mom's face turned red. "What did you and this hospital do to my son?!"
The doctor raised his hands, taking a step back. "The experiment was cancelled after I and the staff protested. Unfortunately, one vial was left unaccounted for when the government pulled them from the hospital."
Tears began to form as the weight of the words hit me. "What is going to happen to me?"
The doctor sighed. "The experiment was pulled because we discovered that, in the initial trials, the drug affected the subject's DNA. For most, completely reversing their gender."
I gasped at that. "I'm turning into a girl?!"
The doctor paused, then softly spoke. "If you are lucky."
Jessica's eyes went wide. "What do you mean by that?!"
The doctor sighed. "Others found themselves regressed in age, up to a decade or more. There is no way to reverse the effects, once it starts working."
After a screaming tirade from Mom, and a call to her attorney, we all left the hospital in silence. It was not until we all got in the car when Mom spoke again. "The doctor gave me the number to reach the heads of this experiment. We will get to the bottom of this, I promise."
I nodded, but did not speak.
Jessica placed a comforting hand onto my shoulder. "Mom has a lot of contacts; if anyone can get answers, she can."
That night, I did not sleep well. I was burning up one moment, and freezing the next, feeling all kinds of weird sensations in my body and mind. I could hear Mom screaming downstairs, but I could not make out what she was saying.
I managed to fall asleep, though I do not know how, and woke up the following morning to find Jessica standing in the doorway to my room.
She tossed me a pair of pants and a shirt. "Get changed and come downstairs. We have visitors who want to talk about what is happening to you."
