Chapter #5

Better Living Through Chemistry

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
Believe it or not, I wasn't always the way you see me now.

Oh, sure, a few things are the same. My parents are still Lance and Zoe Knight; and my younger siblings are still the twins, Brian and Emma. But other things were completely different. I was short; as in, 4', 11". I was scrawny. I needed these huge glasses to see more than a foot in front of my face. Speaking of my face, it was pretty much covered in acne. All in all, Gabe Knight was the boy most likely to be bullied.

I'll leave it up to you to decide which of those is the hardest to believe.

******************************

It was the very end of my junior year in high school. Not only that, but it was my last day at this school, since we were moving out to the coast. My classmates had given me their traditional farewell, which was to shove my head into a toilet and flush. By what is not a coincidence, that was also their traditional greeting at the start of the school year, the traditional way to root for the team, the traditional way to celebrate a victory or cheer the team up after a loss, or any other reason they could come up with. They never seemed to get tired of it, but I certainly did.

As for the twins, I knew Brian would do well socially; he just had a knack for making friends wherever he went. Emma was more like me: short, glasses, and skin that was starting to break out. Yeah, some people meeting us were surprised that Brian and I were brothers, but nobody doubted that Emma and I were related.

My favorite spot in the house was Mom's chemistry lab in the basement. She worked on numerous things down there, and she loved showing us around. She even let us try some things on our own, although she kicked me out of the lab for six months after I made stink bombs.

She was always telling us about the amazing potential of the things she worked on. She taught us that the right combination of chemicals was the reason we were the way we were, and another combination could completely change us.

She was certainly right about that.
