Waiting for the redhead to be completely out of view, Madi slides back to her upright seated position and leans into the door as she pops it open and stands to her feet. The cigarette dangles freely from her lips and she quickly adjusts herself and closes her car door. She takes a final drag as she begins walking back towards the entrance, and withdraws the butt, flicking it across the parking lot and letting the smoke pour from her mouth. She tugged open the double doors and felt to the cool AC. As quickly as she'd gone, she'd returned and it was like nothing happened.
"Hey what was with that?" Hannah said.
"What was what?" Madi said.
"That girl. She was ugly crying and asking where you went." Hannah said in a hush.
"Oh... shit. You didn't say anything?" Madi asked.
"No I... is everything alright?" Hannah's arms uncrossed as she took her lighter and cigarettes back. She paused a moment, waiting for Madi to answer. Madi glanced over Hannah's shoulder and saw someone in her section and took the opportunity to end the conversation.
"Yeah no I'm fine." She said.
For the next 3 hours Madi skated through her shift. Every time she waited on a window table, she couldnt help but glance at her car. She noticed the way the heat bounced off the roofs of the cars and created its signature, illusory haze. She knew her treat for later was probably cooking alive in her car. She decided to keep an eye open for any more potential additional collectibles.
Finally her shift was over. She counted out her tips and clocked out, all but running across the parking lot. She fumbled the key into the lock, and opened the door. She was assaulted by the breathtaking heat and was forced to step back. Letting the car air out for 5 minutes, she got back in the car, started the engine and rolled down the windows. With a sigh, she pops the glove compartment open and fishes the bag out from the mess. She brings it to her lap and shakes the bag, like a child with a gold fish. The form of a tiny girl tumbles lifelessly and Madi frowns. She pops open the ziploc and plucks the girl out, holding her to her eye. Her sweaty body was now coated in shake. She gently jiggled the girl and her eyes shot open. Despite her being so small, she was screaming loud enough that Madi actually heard it ringing in her ear. She laughed.
"Cool." She said. She dropped the girl back into the bag, and tucked the bag into her purse. She put the car in reverse and backed out carefully before starting the drive home. "Cool." She said again, the wind blowing through her hair.
