In the expansive universe, there was a turtle. Upon that turtle were four elephants. On the back of those elephants was the Discworld. In one particular spot was the great city of Ankh-Morpork. This is the city you now wandered. And you were completely lost.
"Excuse me. Could-" you tried to ask, but the woman simply kept walking. You tried to ask many for help, but none paid attention. Except for a particular angry dwarf who gave you enough attention to headbutt your ankle, almost breaking it on his helmet.
"Is there something the matter sir?" a big man asked. A very big man. A man so big that, if he were any bigger, could be classed as two men. Besides this big man was... well, it was alive. That, you were certain. Perhaps it was a monkey that got into a rather nasty carriage accident?
"I'm sorry, sir. I'm new, and-"
"Well of course you're new. You wouldn't see a regular Ankh-Morporkian trying to bother descent folk now, would you."
Something about the way he talked both made sense, and was utter garbage. But then, this was the big city. Maybe that's just the way they were.
He introduced himself as Sergeant Colon of the City Watch, and the person (yes, he claimed to be a person) was Corporal Nobbs. And after much debate on whether or not Nobbs was a person, you thought it best to move on. Mainly because it looked like they'd had this discussion many times before. And would have it many times after.
"Well, it seems to me you have two choices. You can either join The Watch, or the Beggars Guild."
"Which would be better?"
"That depends. Would you rather be at risk of death everyday for 17 AMD a week, or to not pay for anything?"
"But if you are to pay for something," Corp. Nobbs continued, "then don't let the guild find out. Beggars that pay for things get punished."
You thanked them and went on your way.
They were always glad to help strangers. Especially Nobby Nobbs, who was very happy to have walked away with your wallet. Though, he wouldn't be very happy in an hour's time when he goes to pay for drinks and finds it empty.
As you sat on a bench, trying to think what you should do now that you're here, you almost missed the black robes go past you. This was one of the reasons you came to Ankh-Morpork, you had a tendency to see what was really there.
The black clad figure took up its scythe and aimed it at a man that wore a similar uniform to the two you met previously. Before the figure could swing, the man fell to the ground, avoiding the bolt that was aimed for his head. As he ran after the would be assassin, the figure turned towards you.
That skeletal look always sent shivers down your spine. Everyone else thought you were mad when you tried to describe it.
Don't mind me. it said as calmly as a breeze. I was just having a near Vimes experience.
It then looked to another building and walked right through the wall. Like a shadow peaking through a window.
Before you could even register what it said, you heard a woman speak. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
