When you were thirteen, your grandfather had to travel to Kara to conduct business. Rather than leaving you on the farm, he took you along with him. While you were there, he took you to a coffeehouse.
You had had coffee before. You shared a mug of coffee every morning with your grandfather before you started your daily chores. Of course, your coffee was mostly cream, but it was still a morning ritual you two shared.
You soon discovered there was a world of difference between the coffee brewed by a well-to-do farmer as compared to the coffee brewed in a coffeehouse in the Kingdom’s capital city. That coffeehouse’s coffee was one of the most delicious things you had ever tasted.
But even your grandfather’s coffee was better than the coffee you were drinking in Ohesia. But that wasn’t surprising.
Everything in Ohesia seemed to be lackluster. The furthest east port city in the Kingdom, Ohesia lacked the stateliness of Kara and the bustling of Bantul. The major city-states on the far side of the Dark Sea were all on the northern and northwestern shores of the Dark Sea. All their trade went to and through Bantul. If it weren’t for the major presence of the Royal Navy, Ohesia would have felt more like an overgrown fishing village than a port city.
The only thing Ohesia had to recommend it was the availability of excellent horses. And both growing up on your grandfather’s farm and your training as a knight of Tichi made you an excellent judge of horses.
The six of you are staying at an inn in Ohesia called The Eastern Edge. The best thing that can be said about The Eastern Edge is that it’s the best of a bad lot. Tomorrow you will be making the one hundred and twenty-five mile trek to the small town of Aticua, on roads that are said to be as disappointing as you have found Ohesia to be. You’re going to Aticua to investigate nearby ruins which might give you a clue to the Stone of Aygus’ location. You’ll also be making a side trip to let Tonk visit his family, who are herders just to the east of Aticua.
But all that is for tomorrow. Tonight you’re hoping Ohesia will at least grant you a good night’s sleep.
