The pink glow faded. Slowly, Coco and Yaya peeked over the rock they’d hidden behind. The massive machine sat quietly like it had never done anything at all.
“Well, that wasn’t ominous...” Yaya said, brushing dust off her shorts. “Are we okay? I feel okay... You okay?”
“Yeah... I think so,” Coco replied, checking her scanner. “But something’s different. I’m getting energy readings... From us?” She tapped the side of her scanner, frowning at the unusual signals. “Weird. It’s not time energy or quantum, or even Mojo...”
Yaya tilted her head. “Different how?”
Before Coco could answer, a deep rumble came from Yaya’s stomach. It was loud enough to echo slightly off the nearby rocks. Yaya chuckled and patted her belly. “Oh, guess time travel makes me hungry!”
Coco raised an eyebrow. “That wasn’t there before, was it?” She pointed at Yaya’s tummy, which had the faintest hint of roundness—barely noticeable, but definitely more than when they left.
“Huh? No way, I’m pretty sure I didn’t eat anything yet!” Yaya poked at herself. “But I am super hungry, though. Maybe the light zapped my energy?”
Coco bit her lip, thinking. “Maybe. We should get back and run some tests. Or at least figure out where this machine came from.”
But then... Another rumble echoed. Not from Yaya’s belly, but from the ground. The ground trembled beneath their feet as something huge began lumbering toward them through the trees.
