The forest was a maze, and I apparently fucked up the direction of 'Exit'. My eyes raked over the green foliage caging me in, and the sun had lowered itself into the confines of the towering trees. The air bit at my lungs. It was so humid, I was sweating like a goddamn pig. A bird cawed, breaking the sudden silence with its shrill wake-up call. If only I had listened to it.
I whipped out my dying phone to check the map when a sudden twig crackling shattered my fumbling.
I spun around, and my heart launched itself into my throat. Less than ten feet away, a creature towered over me, its presence like a physical punch.
A goddamn centaur.
It stood at least twelve feet tall, its muscular upper torso flexing under a patchwork of dirt and scars, its skin a rich, earthy brown. The rest of it—the horse part—looked just as powerful. The grayish-white fur coat was matted with dirt and dry leaves, and its blue eyes shimmered like the heavens above.
Holy shit.
I stared at the monstrous figure, a montage of animal instinct and uncertainty whizzing in my mind, my body frozen. Was I supper? Was I screwed? Or was I just hopelessly lost with a giant half-man, half-horse?
The centaur cocked its head, squinting at me with curiosity. I swallowed loudly, trying to coax some sense into my locked muscles.
