Chapter #5

Dad comes into the room

    by: Tinymannn Author IconMail Icon
The shadow of Max’s jeans loomed, a suffocating wall of denim descending. I screamed, my voice lost in the void of his laughter, bracing for the crush. But then, a booming voice cut through the chaos. “Max! Get off that truck, you’re gonna crush it!”

The shadow froze. Max’s knees snapped straight, and the truck wobbled as he stood, muttering, “Chill, Dad, it’s fine.” The pressure lifted, and I gasped, sprawled on the flatbed, my tiny body trembling. Max stepped back, his sneakers thudding against the carpet, leaving the truck—and me—stranded in the middle of the living room. He shrugged, grabbed his phone, and shuffled off to his room, the door slamming behind him.

I lay there, catching my breath, the truck’s plastic cool against my back. The living room was quiet now, save for the soft tread of Dad’s footsteps. He stood nearby, hands on hips, surveying the room with a sigh. “Kid’s gonna break everything,” he muttered, nudging the truck with his foot. I jolted, clinging to the flatbed as it shifted. I needed to get his attention, but before I could act, a sharp knock echoed from the front door.

Dad perked up, crossing the room in a few strides. “That’s Jared,” he said, more to himself than anyone. I peeked over the truck’s edge, watching as he opened the door. Uncle Jared stood there, all broad shoulders and a goofy grin, his flannel shirt straining slightly. The two men hugged, their laughter filling the room like a warm tide. “Good to see you, man,” Dad said, clapping Jared on the back. They stepped into the living room, Jared’s eyes scanning the chaos of toys and snack wrappers.

I crouched on the truck, heart pounding. Two giants now, both oblivious to my tiny form. Dad was closer, still near the truck, but Jared’s energy—his loud voice, his animated gestures—drew my attention. Who should I try to signal? Dad, steady but distracted, or Uncle Jared, unpredictable but maybe more likely to notice something small and out of place? My survival depended on choosing the right giant before one of them accidentally swept me away with the mess.
