My legs are shaking. My lungs burn with every breath, and my arms feel like lead. The damage from using 100% Full Cowl again is spreading I can feel it. But I can’t stop now. Not while you’re lying there… bleeding… scared… waiting for someone to save you. I saw the villain’s blast charging up. It’s too big. If it hits, it’ll wipe out three city blocks. Civilians are still trapped in the rubble. And you—you’re barely conscious. I didn’t become a hero to watch people die. So I move. Faster than my body should allow. The wind howls around me as I push One For All to its limit—again.
BOOM!
I hit the ground in front of you, hard, skidding on my knees. I don’t care if my bones break. I don’t care if this is my last fight. I throw my arm up to shield you from the shockwave. Debris slams into my back. The world roars. But you're safe. I glance back at you. You're trying to get up. “Don’t,” I say, gritting my teeth. “You did enough. Let me handle this.”
The villain steps through the smoke, laughing—his body a mess of shifting black tendrils, energy humming in the air like a bomb ready to blow. I gather my energy and kick him he falls to the ground unconscious.
I plant my feet. Sparks arc around my arms.
“I’ve made it this far. If I stop now—then what was it all for?”
