Mark considered who to ask to test the device out with and decided it would be best to test it out with his mother, Mary. Mary had always admired Mark’s work and was always willing to be a test subject when he needed it. She was very supportive which always made Mark want to ask her for help.
With Mary in mind, Mark went into the house and went looking for her. Eventually, he located her in the kitchen as she was making a snack for herself.
“Hey mom, can I bother you for a minute?” Mark asked as Mary chuckled.
“Sure hon, what do you need?”
“I have a new project I want to show you out in the garage.” Mary just smiled and laughed.
“Always something new in the garage. I’ll be right out,” she said as she continued to make her snack. Mark just smiled as he left the house and returned to the garage, waiting for his mother to come out.
A couple minutes passed before Mary finished her snack and came to see what Mark had to show her. As she entered the garage, she was a bit surprised to see the device sitting in the corner. It looked like a piece of sci-fi furniture as Mary couldn’t help but study it. Mark watched his mother study the device before introducing it.
“You like what you see? It’s my new mind swapping device. It’ll be able to swap two people’s minds and let them experience life in a new body,” Mark said as Mary just took it all it. She had always thought her son’s inventions were impressive but this seemed to take the cake.
“Is that so? I have to say dear, if this thing works, you deserve some sort of award or medal. I mean this is impressive,” she said as Mark smiled at the compliment.
“Wanna give it a try? You could be the first person to do what has never been done,” Mark said as Mary nodded.
“Of course I do! What should I do?”
“Just sit in one of the pods and I’ll do the rest,” Mark said as Mary did what she was told. She walked over to the left pod and took a seat in it while Mark went over to the control panel and began to type away. After a couple minutes, he eventually had the device ready as it began to power up. Quickly, Mark ran over to the second pod and sat down in it. He calmed his nerves as he awaited for his machine to do its job. The only problem was, it didn’t go to plan.
How does the machine go wrong?
1.) Neither of them swap bodies and instead the machine fries Mary’s brain and deletes it. As a result, Mary is left in a vegetative state which leaves Mark in a panic.
2.) They swap bodies but as the swap occurs, the machine deletes Mary’s brain. Just like the other option, Mary’s brain is gone but this swap results in Mark’s body now being in the vegetative state.
3.) The swap occurs and is somewhat successful as both bodies are working properly. The problem is, one of their brains is deleted and results in a copy of the surviving brain being placed in the other body. This can go either way with there being two of Mary’s brain or two of Mark’s brain. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
