You descend into the pit filled with the suffering faces. As you sink lower, pain hits you like a tidal wave, and your ears begin to ring with the screams of the others who abide there.
Fighting through the pain-induced haze, you wonder what it was that made you come here.
As the thought sinks in, you realize that there is still a choice to be made, even in this dark, painful pit. You realize that, though you cannot see it, you are standing at a crossroads -- one branch leading to a place darker than dark, the other leading back up.
You move towards the upper branch, but a voice-that-is-not-a-voice stops you, asking the question that you yourself had been wondering moments before: why have you chosen to descend to this point?
You hesitate before answering, knowing that your answer determines the path you will walk.
