Dorothea could hardly believe her ears, the thought of escaping from the workhouse and having a decent job was more than she had ever dared to hope for. Could it really be true? While she thought about this, she looked around her at the warm fireplace, the old wooden desk, the paintings on the walls and then she thought back to the room in the orphanage, cold, dark, damp and overcrowded. If she discovered who had stolen the locket she had a chance to escape all this and have a future.
A voice in the back of her mind asked Why is this locket so important to him? What will happen to whoever stole the locket?
She could not blame any of the orphans for stealing it, everyone needed the money and wanted to escape.
Somewhere in the room a clock ticked reminding her of how quickly time passed.
"I will try to find out who stole the locket", she replied. However, as she left she wondered, should she tell him if she did know?
