Chapter #7

Ryan is caught stealing but escapes, injured

    by: Unknown
Alex was in the middle of soldering the wires for a half-completed prosthetic when she was interrupted by a sudden assault of hard rock music from her phone. She blinked absently, her deep brown eyes unfocused as she drew herself back out of her work. The phone rang a for another two rings before she finally realized what the painful cacophony meant. Another call from Ryan. Alex glanced back at the half-completed prosthetic on the work table uncertainly, then sighed and reached for the iPhone that was buried beneath a pile of diagrams and tools. Even though she was extremely tempted to just ignore him and continue on with her project, if she ignored him he would keep on calling until she picked up. Better to just get it over with. She picked up and put him on speaker as she continued on with her soldering.

"What is it?" she said brusquely, "I'm very busy, so keep it short. What do you want now? That decryption device you wanted isn't going to be going for any less than what I told you before, and I ain't bargaining."

"I remember you said that you install prosthetics before," Ryan's familiar voice came over from the other line, but it sounded strained. "Do you have a medical license?"

The soldering iron froze over a neural processing connection. "I do install prosthetics, but I don't have a medical license. I know all the material, so you think I have seven, ten years to waste?" She rolled her eyes. "Why?" He was probably up to something again, though she didn't understand why he was suddenly asking about a medical license. He never cared about licenses and what not before, so why did he start now?

She heard him sigh, and there seemed to be what sounded like sirens in the background. "That's better than nothing," he said hastily. "I'm coming over in 10 minutes. See you."

"Wait. What--"

He hung up on me. She thought in disbelief. Alex glared at the phone for a moment before scowling down at the still-incomplete project she was working on. It sounded like he was stuck in some trouble again with his job as usual. But if he was coming over, then that meant that she probably wouldn't have the time to finish this today. She sighed then started to clear her things off her desk. She'd have to finish it next time.

After clearing her desk by hurriedly throwing her tools back into their boxes and setting the prosthetic back on top of another pile of equipment next to her desk, she took a cursory glance around her room. Cabinet and desk drawers with tools and papers emptied out onto the ground reminded her suddenly that she was still in the middle of cleaning. I got distracted again. She sighed. Cleaning up always took so much time; it was already the fifth day in a row, but it looked no better. In fact, it looked even worse than it did before she ever cleaned it. Perhaps she should just give up. She really didn't mind it the way it is, and she always could find her things despite it not being the most organized. The only real reason she even attempted to clean up the place was because the rare visitor that came here always complained about how messy it is. But apart from Ryan, not many customers that knew about this place.

Suddenly, a portion of what seemed to be solid wall swung open silently.
