18-wheeler drives by them

This sure is the Bermuda Triangle of the woods, I muse to myself as I pass the duo. Why anybody, hobos included, would be traipsing around in the rain on this sloppy, sorry excuse for a road is beyond me, but this place is full of weirdness. Weird people, weird weather, weird happenings. Just plain weird.

I gaze into the distance further than my lights can shine, willing my eyes to see into the unknown, trying to quell the uneasy feeling in my gut but merely increasing the tension in my shoulders. I ease my heavy grip on the wheel, roll my shoulders, tilt my head to the right and then to the left so as to stretch my tired neck, and then glance at the trip meter.

Three-hundred and forty one miles! I sigh, disappointed.

In the passenger seat, Rudy glances over at me, a curious look on his spotted face. His brown eyes gaze at me, searching, waiting.

"Glad I've got you," I say warmly, reaching over and rubbing behind his soft, floppy ears. He wags his tail and gently rests his muzzle on my arm, then lays down beside me.

After a few minutes I hear a commotion in the back...
