College was good for Robby. He'd done all the right things, got decent grades, an engineering degree and done sports too. Now he had graduated and with his degree had snagged a plum job with a big national firm. It meant relocating from backwoods Nebraska to big city Houston. Robby was fine with it. He was pulling in a good paycheck. Leased a nice downtown apartment and bought a Corvette. Life was good. Robby didn't know anyone in Houston but he wasn't worried. He'd always been good at making friends. Slowly he settled into the new routine, made friends at work and time passed.
"Hey, Rob." Robby had moved from being Robby to Rob - sometimes even Robert when he was presenting a project to a big client. Rob looked up to see Jeff grinning at him from across the room. Jeff and Rob had hired on together and for a time were working at the same level and on the same projects. Jeff had only advanced a bit on the pecking ladder while Rob was now a project leader poised for the next promotion. Jeff came over to Rob, hand outstreched.
"Congratulations on your promotion. You relly deseved it."
Rob took his hand and smiled. "Thanks Jeff. I had a lot of help from my team." Jeff had been a member of the team although Rob wasn't much impressed with Jeff's effort. The two men had been similar in creditionals at the start, even looked alike with the same lean muscular body shape. While Rob had progressed, he had kept his physique. Jeff, not so much. He'd married his college sweetheat and over the last year married life had interfered with his gym discipline. His wife was a great cook as well and Jeff was carrying 30 extra pounds over his college weight. "Here," he said handing Rob a box. "Mandy made you some cookies to celebrate."
Jeff was getting a double chin and a softly overhanding gut.
"Thanks." Rob said taking the box.. "You're a lucky man. Mandy's a peach."
"Lucky?" Jeff chuckled. "I'm lucky I don't weigh 300 pounds. Never thought I'd have a weight problem back in school. Now all I need to do is see food and I gain."
"Does Mandy think you are too big?"
"She keeps talking about a diet and then she cooks enough for a platoon and I can't stop eating."
"Well, you aren't some college jock any more. No need to look like it."
Rob left Jeff to mull that over and took the cookies over to the coffee room. No way he was going to eat them.
Rob's lifestlye was very disciplined. Fresh vegetables, lean meats, no fat no carbs. As he moved up the ladder he began to buy nicer suits, then had them custom made. He was proud of the way he looked in them. He even suspected that looking good might have more to do with his rise in the organization than his brains and hard work. There was only one chink in Rob's facade. It wasn't really a weakness just an area where Rob discipline wore thing from time to time. It was unexpected because Rob hadn't been raised in a family where food was important and yet, once Rob was introduced to fine cuisine it awakened an appetite that he never knew he had. It started when he started taking clients out to dinner in fine restaurants. At first he just paid no attention to the food but gradually he began to appreciate the finer points of fine dining and on rare ocasions he indulged. He began to look forward to those client dinners and scour the restaurant reviews for the best
