Chapter #8

Bug's Eye View

    by: Small1 Author IconMail Icon
The bug-sized scientist watched helplessly as the colossal men in black gathered his computer and other items and carted them out of his home.

At the same time, he had to listen to their condescending comments about him, including the non-flattering reference to him as an "Einstein."

More disturbing than a few rude remarks, however, was the barely veiled threat uttered by the black giant security chief.

"LET'S JUST SAY THAT THE GOOD PROFESSOR IS IN FOR A WORLD OF HURT IF I GET MY HANDS ON HIM!" That implied threat rattled the tiny scientist as he watched the mighty behemoths invading his home and privacy.

With a sense of dread, the speck-sized professor realized that any of the titans could easily destroy him by the most casual of actions and not even realize what they had done.

That knowledge kept him huddled in his hiding space near the building-sized napkin holder on his kitchen table.

After ransacking his computer and other equipment, most of the giant departed. Unfortunately, the enormous chief of security looked in no hurry to depart.

Gazing up at the giant's dark face, the shrunken scientist tried to recall what he knew about the enormous, muscular man.

He remembered that his name was Franklin, and the tiny man recalled also how much more difficult it had become to smuggle out samples of his shrinking formula once Franklin took charge of security at the lab.

The shrunken scientist also realized that, even if he got out of his current shrunken predicament, he was probably in considerable trouble with his corporate bosses at EDL Labs.

He watched in awe as the colossal man moved around the kitchen with a swaggering arrogance, paying no respect at all to personal privacy. The bug-sized man knew that he was in dire straits, but he began to formulate a contingency plan. The details remained sketchy, but the gist of his scheme was to wait for Tommy's arrival and attempt to make contact with his teenaged neighbor.

As he stared up at the enormous security officer snooping into his kitchen cabinets and drawers, the little man knew with certainty he trusted his neighbor a lot more than the EDL Labs Chief of Security.

He had to admit that the titan's impressive physique commanded respect. Every movement conveyed a sense of immense power and strength. His uniform outlined his muscular frame. Despite the peril, the little man found himself edging away from his hiding place to get a more unobscured look at the handsome but frightening giant.

Suddenly, the loud ringing of a cell phone interrupted the silence. The tiny man froze and listened as the giant man engaged in a conversation.

As he spoke into the phone, the giant also wandered closer to the kitchen table. Every step caused the wooden surface beneath the tiny scientist's feet to tremble.

His more rational mind told him he needed to get back into hiding, but he had still failed to move when he felt the titanic man's dark eyes lock onto him.

The giant man raised a hand over the tabletop as he ended his call.

Too late, the tiny man realized he had been seen.

"Wait! It's me!" Mr. Smith screamed. "Don't swat me!"

The shadow of the enormous hand loomed over him...
