When Ryan awoke, a gradual process of dawning awareness that he had not quite shaken that strange feeling, he noticed some strange changes.
The most readily apparent involved the altered scale of his surroundings. The furniture, the refrigerator, the table support a microwave, had taken on the dimensions of buildings.
"Why's everything look so big?" Ryan wondered aloud, only he didn't hear his voice.
He heard an odd, raspy noise that seemed produced any time he tried to speak.
He took a step back, which coincided with his first notice of the roach trap that loomed to his side like a dark, foreboding cave of black plastic.
Ryan tried to rub his eyes.
At the same moment, an insect raised its spiky forelimbs to its large, compound eyes. A tough exoskeleton encased his reddish-brown form.
Ryan wanted to scream.
He now had a relatively small head and a broad, flattened body divided into a segmented thorax and abdomen. Two very long, flexible antennae sprouted from his forehead. He tried to curse, which only set his mouthparts located on the underside of his head, to rasping again.
Although he now lived in a tidy apartment, he had lived in plenty of dumps. In that time, he had seen plenty of cockroaches.
"How?" Ryan groaned, or rather rasped, with his mouthparts.
He scurried across the tiles of the lounge.
His alert body picked up the vibration well ahead of the arrival of Silas.
Ryan froze in place as the gigantic custodian entered the lounge.
