Greetings, Winnie Kay! I am reviewing this because I am part of the Anniversary Team and today, as you probably know, is your 15th Writing.com anniversary!
First of all, my reviews are intended to be helpful and encouraging, not hurtful in any way. Use what you feel works for you, and leave the rest.
The Positives/What I Liked
Oh, wow. This is definitely deep. And so well written! The AABA rhyme scheme really works well here. Your rhyming is superb and does not feel forced at all.
My favorite stanza is:
That age misspent in argument,
rebellious music, dark dissent.
If I’d known then the bough was bent,
I might have been less discontent.
The above stanza reminds me of my teen years at one point. In the early to mid 70s, which was a very depressing time to be a teen, in my humble opinion. The line rebellious music, dark dissent really spoke to me! Thank God, I managed to rise above all that, eventually.
My dad used to joke around and say, "If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd taken better care of myself." But not everyone is fortunate enough to experience a longer life after unhealthy and/or other bad choices made earlier on. Your poem tugs at my heart.
Suggestions/Comments to Consider
I have nothing to suggest. Very good!
Final Thoughts
This is so beautiful, yet so sad. You are obviously a very gifted poet! This is impressive.
