“One cannot always be laughing at a man without now and then stumbling onto something witty.” – Jane Austin.
Welcome to July! When I think of July, Christmas in July usually comes to mind. And Christmas is always a season that brings a smile to my face. It’s a season of good vibes, and upbeat mood, and warmhearted moments. Christmas usually brings out the best in people. When I need a fix – a smile, a laugh, good vibes, and I’m looking for an upbeat mood, I usually check out a Romantic Comedy.
Romantic Comedies have a lot of appeal. They’re usually charming, lighthearted stories that usually make the reader smile and leaves them generally feeling upbeat and happy. It’s been said that “Laughter is the best medicine,” and I’m a firm believer in that. Some of my favorite Romantic Comedies are: Taming of the Shrew, While you were Sleeping, and Pretty Woman. Today, I thought I’d touch on the expectations of romantic comedies, themes, and troupes that make the genre so successful.
Question: Is "Romancing the Stone" - Action/Adventure movie or Romantic Comedy?

With a romantic comedy, the writer wants to present a light-hearted romance. And sometimes, when the world is full of stress, a light-hearted story is just what the doctor ordered.
Some of things a reader/viewer expects from a rom-com is how the couple meet – it should be cute, a little humorous or even a bit unexpected. Their reactions to the first meeting is what makes us smile. Another expectation is to watch how the couple fall in love. We enjoy seeing them on cutsie dates and fun adventures. We also want to see how the couple deals with adversity. How do they deal with tension and how does that bring them closer together?
Some common rom-com troupes include: “Based on a Lie:” how we met was a misunderstanding that just morphed into a great big lie that I just can’t get out of and it’s so over the top now, it’s funny/not funny. The “Ensemble” cast which has a little something for everyone. The “Best Friend” troupe were 2 people are best friends and perfect for each other but they don’t see it until they do!
Other troupes include: Opposites Attract, which makes me think of the movie, “When Harry Met Sally,” Fairytale – for some reason “Enchanted” comes to mind and Holidays – there’s nothing more romantic than falling in love during a major holiday season to keep the mood in the air light, and mistaken identities, (for example the good natured guy mistakes the sweetheart heroine for the ‘witchy’ replace the “w” with a “b” girl who he’s been set up with on a blind date.
Several popular themes in rom-coms include: getting a second chance along with the idea of rekindling that past romance and doing it over to avoid a previous mistake as well as the pursuit of love can be made easier because of the awesome friends you’ve got.
There’s a lot more to Romantic Comedies, so if you have any insights you’d like to share, please write in. I’d love to hear from you. For now, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Rom-Coms

Feedback from my last Romance/Love NL dated 11 JUNE 2025:
THANKFUL SONALI Magical Days!
Hallo! I put this comment on "Note: View this Note" but thought I'd mention it here as well.
I feel that plants speak more than flowers - they are living and they grow when nurtured.
Flowers are cut, and they wilt with time.
So - plants are more romantic!
I came here to make that comment and found you've actually picked one of my items for this NL! So thanks for that!
Honestly, I never thought about plants being more romantic, but you make a good argument for it!
Princess Megan Rose
Flowers are a sure sign of spring. Some good items about flowers and I enjoyed reading everyone's comments about flowers as well as the Author's items that were selected. An interesting newsletter.
Thanks for reading, Megan! It’s always nice to see you pop in.
Feedback from my Newsfeed questions 3 JULY 2025:
Answer 1 of the questions or both :
#1 - Why do you watch Romantic Comedies?
#2 - What's your favorite Romantic Comedy movie or couple?
AmyJo-Downhill slide begins!
I do enjoy a Rom/Com on occasion. My favorite is When Harry Met Sally. It's a bit offbeat, but a fun watch.
🌖 HuntersMoon
I'll have what she's having.

Not quite the answer to your questions:
When I watch a rom/com I want it to be more than just two people hooking up. It needs another genre or three. Mystery? Culture? Fantasy? Myth? Supernatural? History is okay but I'm not into horror and if it's slash/dash violence? I'm outta there. "Freddy Meets Barbie On Elm Street, Part 205"? No way...
"He's Coming to Me" {Thailand) was promoted as a rom-com BL of a human and a ghost. But really? It was also a detective story, mystery and gave insight into culture, generational change (in food and music) and used family secrets as a plot twist. It's layered. Genres: Romance/Supernatural/Detective as well as Culture/Family/Death. It also has many comedic scenes but it's more of a Tragicomedy.

#1. Comedies are fun and make you laugh even if it contains that mushy stuff.
#2. Sorry. Can't recall any particular one.
S 🤦
#1 - Because they are fun and have some strong emotions and are the sort of thing to watch when you want to feel happy in more than one manner.
I will say that many stories labelled as "romantic comedies" are either not romantic nor that funny. I think the British do them better than anyone, especially when Richard Curtis is involved.
#2 - Favourite couple is Charles and Carrie from Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994). Favourite rom-com is Music And Lyrics (2007) (and, yes, I am fully aware it is from the USA).
Dave Ryan
1/ When done well, they can be an entertaining way to kill a couple of hours.
2/ It's maybe a stretch to call it a comedy as it's really a sci-fi drama, but I liked "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind". Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet were cast against type and it worked extremely well. "The Adjustment Bureau" with Emily Blunt and Matt Damon is another enjoyable sci-fi drama with occasional humorous touches. (And, for what it's worth, I've just noticed the funny stuff was driven by the female characters in both cases.)
Pensivity
Without a doubt it has to be Steve Martin and Mary Steenbergen in Parenthood!
StephBee is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. Her story, "Mr. Christmas Elf," is a romantic comedy that will have you believing Elvis the Elf when he tells you what the meaning of Christmas is.
