About This Newsletter

Romance/Love Newsletter by Dawn

A look at how sometimes the odd personality can find their perfect match in someone else just as weird. The romance story doesn't have to always be perfect characters and great bodies, even if some cover images suggest otherwise.

Letter from the editor

The right person will come when the time is right.

It's a common saying but what does that mean for the variety of personalities that will exist. Well, some people end up with a partner who is very similar. They will hear jokes about dating themselves. While some go fo exact opposites, which can cause some tension but that can help when it comes to writing stories. While we see romance covers with guys who almost never wear shirts and have abs or women who are so pretty, even if they are "mousy" it just takes removing glasses and letter her hair down for her to be super pretty. What about those of us on the spectrum of oddities? Where is our romance?

I will admit that I have found romances more interesting when a character is a little quirky. Like the Snow & Winter series because the main character is a nerdy guy that runs an oddity store and has a light sensitivity that includes being unable to see color. The other love interest character might be a cop but he also has PTSD from time in the military. As a couple they are an interesting mix.

Match maker, match maker make me a match, find me my strange, let there be an odd catch...

I will also admit that the inspiration for this newsletter is my sister and her fiancé. He is a little younger and while they both have odd obsessive interested, other than the Queen Mary (where they met and still work), most of the interests are very different. Most of the movies he loves, she has never seen. She likes a couple video games like Doctor Mario, he has 5 different gaming systems. She has no patience for things, he wanted to build a lego set of the Titanic. Yet, they sound sickly cute together. I had to listen to them as they worked on that ship and it's just very sweet. Somehow, they found each other and even with the difficult stuff (it isn't all roses and Red Bulls), they really get each other in a special way.

And that's kind of what I mean with matching the weird. Sure, if you want an obvious example you can maybe think of something like Morticia and Gomez Addams. Macabre can make for an interesting story but it's not the only one. Sports characters can have strange situations or personalities involved, so even the popular hockey romances could be about finding someone that matches their weird side. It could be matching them with someone super strange in comparison, like the player hockey boy with the super nerdy, losing virginity while getting his master's shy boy. Maybe it's the office executive who is busy all of the time with no understanding for needing time off falling in love with a single mother who enjoys different hobbies, like catching Pokemon characters with her phone. There are many different things that can fall under the category of weird to the point that most of us have something. It's a matter as to how much those aspects are involved in the character's life and what gets shown in the story.

What is a quirk?

Well, if you do a google search it might give a similar answer to this: an unusual habit or part of someone's personality, or something that is strange and unexpected. Though there is also a science based definition too. Quirks are exotic vector-like fermions that transform as the fundamental (and anti-fundamental) under a hidden confining group, but also carry Standard Model charges. Probably not something romantic but maybe you could find a way to use the fermions, or could just be a Sheldon or Leonard type character that also finds romance.

The essential fact is that everything is still up to you as the writer. You can write romance characters who are very typical or you can make them a little strange. The fun is seeing what you come up with and how the romance develops. Readers will enjoy the journey when given access. So let's keep writing romance and don't be afraid to make the character a little weird because you never know when you might find the perfect, odd match.

Ask & Answer

Have you tried matching a strange set of characters or do you go more ideal when writing romance?

Last month, I discussed about the relationship conversation when everything gets defined. Something I have yet to have because a certain someone just told me when we were together, lol. It seems odd but also important when the time comes to define whether it's a relationship or not. Here is the comment sent in for that topic:

I have tried this scene so often, and it has only worked a couple of times. I struggle to get it to feel natural - when it starts, where it happens, what has led up to it. But the more I try, the better I guess I'll get at it.
