Contests & Activities Newsletter by Dawn

A look at some of the things that still go on after the fun of the first week. Also, some mention of burn out and trying to keep going after spending a whole week focused on activities and challenges to celebrate 25 years of WDC magic.

Letter from the editor

WDC turned 25 this month and like every year, the first week involved a number of contests and activities to help celebrate the milestone. Many of them last only the week, which is both a long time but also short with some including daily deadlines. And it's not just Writer's Cramp or Daily Flash Fiction with the very short deadlines and different prompts during this time.

The Birthday Bash is a fun time but also it can be overwhelming, plus exhausting. There are so many challenges and members hosting different events that it can be hard to pick. Do you take part in writing blog posts every day for a week? What about entering rounds every day from one of the longest run contests on the site? Plus, the little mystery masquerade that involves different characters and your imagination. There are also several raffles, challenges that get rewarded with merit badges and contests with special birthday related prompt.

One good thing to consider with the many contests and challenges is that some of them last longer than a week.

Hopefully you were able to do some things during the crazy fun week of September 1-7 for WDC's birthday/anniversary or celebration of creation, however you want to call it. It is a fun time but difficult to get everything you might want done, which I definitely understand. There are always more activities available than I can manage. One thing that helps, is focusing on the ones that last for just the week first. After the 7th, that is a good time to look at the others that last longer.

If the birthday week is that, a week, why are there ones that allow entries all month?

Cause it's fun. Okay, there are more reasons than that. One of my own contests allows longer stories with this year the round having a minimum of 5,000 words because it was set up for the Long month in The Contest Challenge. I know it can be very hard to write a story within a short amount of time, let alone one that will border on novelette length. That is why I try to give people more time to enter but I added special incentives for those that did enter during particular times. Other contests are often held with a month deadline. That is just their standard timeframe.

There are a number of opportunities to create items or take part in WDC birthday related challenges that are still going on for the rest of the month. If you missed out during the week or had your hands full and want to do more, make sure the check them out! I have listed below some of the contests and activities that are still going for the rest of the month. The birthday challenge link is still active as I write this newsletter but it might not last the whole time. So, check out these links and save them if you haven't already. Have fun and keep the party going because the site has been here for 25 years and if we stay active, help each other and write, maybe it will be here for 25 more.

Ask & Answer

Are there any contests you entered during September that lasted longer than the first week for WDC Birthday Celebration?

Last month, I did a newsletter about the review process. The main topic was the use of a template when having reviews specific to a contest or an activity. Here are some thoughts by other WDC members on the topic:

Comment by JCosmos Author Icon:
great tips I will look at creating a review template for my reviews here and on Fan story

Comment by Beholden Author IconMail Icon:
I do have a template but only use it for requested reviews. Although reviewing without a template means I sometimes forget to mention something I've noticed, it gives me greater freedom to talk about the things that really struck me about the piece. And people seem to like that.

Comment by SpookyBee Author Icon:
Yes, I do have a template that I think works for me. I like the template you offered here and I'm going to look at incorporating some of its features. I really think templates are helpful for me as a reviewer.

The comments for the newsletter about review templates are interesting. When the newsletter was highlighted in the newsfeed section, the comments tended towards not liking templates at all. Yet, the responses to the newsletter are more okay with the concept. Goes to show how it helps to put information out in more than one path because different opinions will exist out there.
