Letter from the editor

A Perfect Christmas

It’s only a few weeks until Christmas again. Time seems to be flying by! Like everyone else, I’m busy preparing for the Christmas season, and it seems like everyone is just as excited as I am.

As I ponder what to write in my newsletter this week, a song comes to mind about what makes Christmas perfect. It prompts me to consider: what truly makes for a perfect Christmas?

This gives me a thought and makes me wonder how we celebrate it, as each country has its own traditional way of celebrating it.

Here are my favorite countries that have their traditional unique celebration of Christmas (From the Google net)

*FlagB* 1. Japan for its KFC Christmas Dinner
• Tradition: Due to a lack of a large Christian population, Christmas is a secular holiday treated like a romantic event. The popular tradition is to have a KFC fried chicken bucket for Christmas dinner.
• Reasoning: This practice became a nationwide tradition through a successful advertising campaign in the 1970s.

*FlagB*2. Iceland for its 13 Yule Lads
• Tradition: In Iceland, 13 mischievous figures known as the "Yule Lads" come down from the mountains one by one to visit children in the 13 days leading up to Christmas Eve.
• Reasoning: Each Yule Lad has a different personality and is known for a specific type of mischievous behavior, and the tradition is a unique take on the figure of Santa Claus.

*FlagB*3. Venezuela for its Skating to Midnight Mass
• Tradition: In the capital city of Caracas, it is a tradition for locals to roller-skate to and from the Christmas Eve midnight mass services.
• Reasoning: This has become a popular and festive way to celebrate Christmas in Venezuela, blending the spiritual with a unique cultural activity.

*FlagB*4. Philippines for its Giant Lantern Festival
• Tradition: In the city of San Fernando, there is a festival of giant, illuminated lanterns called "Ligligan Parul," or the Giant Lantern Festival, which is held on the Saturday before Christmas Eve.
• Reasoning: These lanterns symbolize the Star of Bethlehem and are beautifully crafted in various shapes and sizes.

*FlagB*5. Austria for its Krampus Parades
• Tradition: In many Alpine towns, the days leading up to Christmas feature a figure named Krampus who is said to punish misbehaving children.
• Reasoning: Krampus is often seen as the opposite of Santa Claus, and his appearances are often celebrated with Krampuslauf parade.

We have various ways and traditions for celebrating Christmas, as has been stated, through various countries, each reflecting the joyful spirit of the season. However, the most important reason we celebrate is to remember the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, while also sharing the occasion with our loved ones.

How about you, do you also have a traditional, unique way of celebrating Christmas?
