 | I really hope that you are enjoying the exercises that I have been sharing with you from Writing The Wave by Elizabeth Ayres.
I have found it very helpful, especially when dealing with writer's block. The exercises are quick and sometimes so totally off-the-wall that it's hard to see how they will help anyone build a piece of writing. But they do...

 | Continuing on with Writing the Wave
 Chapter 2
Use imaginative layering to generate raw material

 1. Set a timer for 3 minutes and then write down all the sounds that you are hearing around you

 2. Now make four columns on a sheet of paper and write one of the sounds from step one in column one. Then in each of the next three columns, write three alternative phrasings of this sound. Do this for four of the sounds.

 example:

 baby laughing
 tiny tot finds her toes
 ha brng ggrgl ha!
 toothless smile boils over

 3. Divide a new sheet of paper into four boxes (fold lengthwise, then across). Put one sound from step one into each box

4.Now put a color into each box

 5. Set your timer for 5 minutes. On a separate piece of paper, write down the link between your sound and the color you wrote down. Was there a conscious association? Did you just feel right about it? Or was it totally arbitrary?

 6. In each box from step 3, put a taste

 7. Now a personal memory

 8. The name of a country

 9. A person (nonspecific- adult, female for example)

 10. Now give each of these people a height and weight

 11. Now give them each an occupation

 12.	Finally, give them each a secret.

 13. Now again set your timer, this time for 10 minutes. You are going to create a piece of writing in which you “mush” two boxes together.

 14. Now read your last piece of writing out loud (it always sounds better when you read it outloud). Now write down 5 things you like about it

 Chapter 2 is now complete!
