| as I took the first step, full of hope
 and memory
there was spring in my feet
and a smile on my lips—
 thrilled,
 eager to descend to insanity.

 I wandered into strange turns,
 lost in personification
 and nonsense,
 alliteration and form,
 there was nothing unreachable
 nothing so difficult
that I could not attempt it.

 I read and wrote—
 finding in each new line
 a depth to myself
 a way to become better.
 each challenge
 becoming
a new way to think about
 writing and the world

and as I make my way
out of the maze I’ve danced,
 back toward sanity—
 my feet are even lighter,
 my smile brighter,
 and I’m ready
 to start the dance again.
