A new client of Elmore's proves problemactic. 300 words

Is Making Sense Really Necessary?

“You aren’t making sense,” Elmore Binks said to the distinguished gentleman that had burst into his detective agency as he’d opened the door.

“Terribly sorry, old sport. Do you mind if I sit down? I’ve been beside myself for days!”

“Certainly, sir. Take this chair.”

As he took a seat, he pulled out a blindingly white handkerchief and mopped his face.

Elmore watched his breathing settle, then said:

“When you’re ready, perhaps you could start your story again,” he said calmly.

The man pocketed his handkerchief and offered his hand.

“Barron Shopshire,” he said as he did so.

Elmore couldn’t help but react with shock.

“The famous actor of stage and screen?” he blurted.

The man waved away the recognition.

“Right now, I’m just a frightened man. I fear for my life every second, even in here!”

“You are perfectly safe in my presence and my office. What’s going on?”

“As you may know, I’ve been on a long run as The Phantom. Sold out every performance, which is very gratifying.”

Elmore nodded his understanding.

“But I have begun to receive threatening notes in my dressing room. Vile disgusting accusations of making my role a reality.”

“Is that a possibility?”

Barron stared at him for a long time.

“Have you been sleeping?” Elmore asked next.

“Yes, but I’ve been plagued with odd dreams. I find myself on the street, luring women to my rooms. I keep them there by force and make love to them.”

“Are you sure you’re dreaming? Sleepwalking is a sign of stress.”

Barron snarled at the startled detective. He stood up, drew a pistol and started moving toward him. Elmore pressed a silent alarm, and his assistant and bodyguard came bursting into the office.

“I’ve called the police sir,” he said.
