Steampunk is a magical genre, a world where virtually anything goes, and the stories to be found there, if handled well, can be magnificent romps through worlds that might have been. Steampunk, at its heart, is Victorian science fiction, descriptions of the worlds that might have emerged had their grandiose and far-fetched ideas borne fruit.
But be advised, dear reader, that it is a field that tempts an author to go far beyond the bounds of what is sane and reasonable. How far and how much of that you're willing to accept, and indeed, seek out is a matter for individual taste to decide. I tend to stay close to the laws of physics as we understand them, which gives my stories a grounding in the real world that makes them feel believable. Some have called my writing "Steampunk Lite," which I don't view as any sort of insult. It makes my stories a good gateway for anyone curious about the field; I like to think my superior writing makes them compelling as well.
Well, we must be allowed our little fantasies, now mustn't we? ~ Jack
