My journey to writing a novel while fighting my own demons!

Blogging. This is an intimidating idea for me. However, I do enjoy pushing my own boundaries, learning, and growing. In short, I’ll try anything once as far as writing goes. Sometimes, I manage nothing more than a word and others result in pages and pages of endless fun and discovery for me. Add to that, I don’t have any material to share yet, so I came up with the brilliant idea to blog about my current journey. I can’t say this will work out to anyone’s benefit, but I’m willing to try. Who am I? Sylverscribe, but you can call me “Sylver.” Welcome to my blog, “Journey to The Beyond.”

Writing is a journey, isn’t it? One often fraught with obstacles and pitfalls. One of my greatest obstacles is time. As a store manager for a major retail chain, I work ten plus hours a day, five days a week, and my days off are split. Add the introvert ingredient and I’m usually mentally, emotionally, and physically drained when I come home. However, this is true for most of us, and I refuse to use this as a crutch anymore. The pitfall is, in falling to this excuse, I developed one heck of a case of Writer’s Block. I’m fighting my way through that one day at a time. There are days I succeed and days I fall flat on my face. The good thing is I am picking myself up, dusting myself off, and trudging right on along. That includes taking steps to help myself along the way.

The first step I’ve taken is the obvious one – I make myself sit down and write every day. That is part of my purpose for starting this blog. Even if this isn’t really up my alley, I still spend some time writing, and that serves to get those creative juices flowing. Every little bit helps! Another thing I’ve done is joined Skillshare, my goal to learn new writing techniques and methods to combat Writer’s Block. Not everything I try will work for me, but I only need one technique to turn that lock and open the door to those wild worlds of endless imagination trapped within my head! Currently, I’m trying out the Pomodoro Technique, something I never knew existed until one of my Skillshare classes. Truth is, so far, I like the technique, especially since one of my biggest issues is focus. Doesn’t help that work constantly calls me, even on my days off. I really do need to learn to put my phone on “Do Not Disturb!”

I am using the Pomodoro Technique to begin working on my novel “The Beyond.” Yes, that’s where the blog title came from – because that’s exactly what this is and what I’ve chosen to share. How far have I come with my novel? I’ve written a few pages for my free writing exercises that also help me to develop my characters more. So far, I’ve focused on the MC, but more and more is coming. I’ve begun working out his history, a couple of supporting characters, and we will see how things go today! Since most of my plans for today were sidelined (my daughter is sick – recovering, but sick – so I’m trying to keep things quiet and peaceful in the house for her sake), I’m going to focus on writing. (Distraction – it’s raining! I love the rain!) Anyway, this is the first step toward a day of writing! Now on to my free writing session and then my Pomodoro’s!

I hope wherever you are that your day is everything you hoped, that your writing is all you dreamed, and that you succeed at everything that you do! Until next time, I’m off to pick up that pen and write to my heart’s content!
