you smiled at me going

to the movies

was a fingernail on the blackboard of my psyche


secretly


holding you—holding me—our masks fell—

tongues entwined—

writhing like snakes coiling


in and out of a bleached skull


i longed to taste the candy filling your boiling cauldron

i longed to strip off your costume of decorum

i longed to break the thirteen rules of forbidden magic

and bind our souls beyond eternity


but i only asked if you wanted popcorn
