| Our vacation started innocently enough. We decided to spend our week at the beach . The white sands of west Panama. The sun was warm and the temperature a balmy 74. A breeze blew with the tang of saltwater, gently ruffling the edges of the large umbrella we had installed in the area we chose. As I looked around at the surrounding are, I noticed what looked like a cave, just a few yards from our space. I decided to take a walk and investigate. As I got closer to the craggy rocks, I could see it really was a cave and not just a shadow. The cave was larger than I imagined when I first saw it. As I entered, the floor of the cave was smooth, firm sand. There was no evidence that high tide entered. I could see quite a way in, the sun lighting the first several yards. I looked back to my family as I moved further into the cave. There was a faint smell of sulfur that grew stronger the further I went. About fifty feet in I noticed what looked like a footprint but, it wasn't like any footprint I had ever seen before. It resembled photos of dinosaur print I had seen in magazines, only the "toes" were spread out more and there were indentions a inch or two beyond the end of the toe impressions. Looking closer, I decided the tracks had been made by kids playing games. They looked like what I imagined dragon tracks would resemble. I chuckled to myself as I explored, thinking about kids play acting the Puff the Magic Dragon song from the sixties. Suddenly I tripped over a smooth oval shaped stone. I looked closer at the stone. It was larger than my palm and had a uniformly dimpled surface. I lifted the stone and held it up in the sunlight so I could see it better. It felt a little warm, like it had been heated by the sun. I made a fateful decision to take it with me, after all it might be a geode and have crystals inside. (to be continued) |
