Daily Flash Fiction: Prompt for 12-13-2025. 298
Write a story that includes the line: “What is that supposed to be?”

The Snowman

“What's that supposed to be?” asked Jack.

“A snowman,” said his four-year-old sister, Meg.

“A snowman would be made out of snow. It barely sprinkled last night.”

“Oh, I thought all funny things in the yard were called snowman.”

“No, only the ones made out of snow. What is this?”

“I don’t know… I was trying to make a mother.”

“What did you make it out of? I mean her…”

“Rocks and dirt and leaves and some junk from in the house.”

“Very creative. But I don’t think Mom’s going to let you keep using her garbage can…”

“Oh, I better find something else to hold up the parts.”

“I’ll help!” off they went.

Soon they had it done.

“Thanks for helping!”

Mom came out, yelling! “What are you two doing?

“We’re making a snowman!” they said, together.

Totally confused, but not willing to start anything, Mom said “Oh, OK,” and went back in.

Since it wasn’t actually snow, the snow-person lasted until spring. Every time Mom pulled into the driveway and saw it, she planned to get rid of it. But then coming out of the garage, between the cold and the real snow, she forgot, until spring.

Finally, one Saturday, ready to start the spring clean-up in the front lawn Mom went out. The first thing she wanted to get rid of now was the now practically a puddle of the snow/not snow man.

The ball that was the snowman’s head was long gone. The body was apparently made out of an old pillowcase stuffed with stuff, and an old pair of Dad’s boots for feet.

Opening the pillowcase, she found almost everything they had been looking for all winter! Including her husband’s wallet!

It turned out to be her best story ever. Meg hated it…
