Step by step instructions

On WdC, books are probably one of the more confusing item formats to understand, especially for newbies.
There are several different types: some allowing comments, some not; some where you can scroll almost endlessly down the page, reading complete entries; some where each entry is sampled on a main page and you click to read more, one at a time; others display only a table of contents with entry titles.
They can be used as blogs, as holding places for smaller pieces of poetry and prose, and as narrative series or novels, with a list of chapters.

Each of these is available to users with an Upgraded membership or higher. For an in-depth look at each type and how to best use them, visit "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. and Book from Writing.Com 101 Open in new Window. as well as the other relevant entries.

If you have a book item in your portfolio, you may want to enable comments on it, especially if you use it as a blog or a place for an exchange of thoughts. Here are some steps to ensure you can do this.

         1. You need to click on the gear icon at the top right corner of your book item and choose “edit item.”

         2. Scroll down past the main text entry box to reach the specifics of item type, genres, and access permissions.

         3. There will be six different areas to refine your item, and then a separate section titled “Book Settings.”

         4. At the top of the first section, between the main text entry box and the folder choice, be sure to choose “Journal/Blog” as your item subtype. Step 6 won't work unless this is done correctly.

         5. Under “Book Settings” and “Entry Format,” ensure you choose one of the three Blog Formats: 10 entries per page, 20 entries per page, or “Summary Format.”

         6. Then, again under “Book Settings,” choose “Blog Commenting: Enabled.”

         7. Now click on Save and View and check to make sure it's set up the way you want *Smile*

And there you have it. Enjoy your new blog *Delight*
