Summary of this Book...
The adventures of Alvin continue. On his way to his apprenticeship, young Alvin and his brother, Measure, get captured by "Reds". Their capture ultimately leads to the massecure at Tippy-canoe and the seperation of America between white man and red. Alvin's powers grow, and he uses how to put them to better use.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who enjoyed the first Alvin book. You can read it alone, but as in all books in a series, it works better when placed with the whole.
I especially liked... | ||
The way Alvin is revealed as "half-red" and learns the secret of the greensong. I also liked hearing the vision of the Shining Man from Lolla-Wossiky's point of view.
I didn't like... | ||
This book has more violence and a darker thread than the original or the third book, which I have read far more often. Of course, it deals with some darker people.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Move on to the third book, Prentice Alvin. I also wanted to research the massacure at Tippecanoe.
This Book made me feel...
Very sad, because of the large number of deaths. Also, we meet Mike Fink here, not the nicest of characters.
The author of this Book...
has done another great job, but this is probably my least favorites in the Alvin-Maker series.
I recommend this Book because...
It does a great job of showing Alvin's next step, his learning, and explaining a lot of things you will need to know later. Just be warned - it's sad.
I don't recommend this Book because...
There is a lot of death in it. It is one of the most violent of any of Card's books, and more gruesome, though not in a Stephen King sort of way.
Further Comments... | ||
Card strengthens the development of his characters here, particularly Alvin. Also, having read the book jacket on the newest one (almost there!), I get a feeling that Lolla-Wossiky/Tensa-Tawa is going to a very important character who reappears. Just remember, this is not for the squeamish.
