How to Read the Tarot

Begin by brewing a cup of tea,
a nervine, lemon balm or chamomile,
this is after all, your future.
A reading at the dark of the moon is best,
before the night creatures crawl
and bad humours fill the air.
Pick a circular deck, with a fairy-tale motif,
and no reversals.
Hold a question in your heart,
shuffle the cards and place them on the table.
Choose only two.
Like the ancient Israelites,
these are your seer stones, Urim and Thumimm,
black and white, yes or no.
Isn't that all you were asking?

STENCH

There is but one thing of real value--to cultivate truth and justice, and to live without anger in the midst of lying
and unjust men. Marcus Aurelius

Democracy turns to fascism
step by secret step.
Eat the rich people shout
but that won't stop
our demolished freedoms crumbling.
What legacies are we leaving?

Can you smell the stench of the lies?

In the morning I rise shaking.
Existential dread floods my chest.
I am not an immigrant.
I am married, and straight.
I am past child bearing age.
But I am afraid
and tremble for all.
What scam justice is this?

Do you smell the stench of his lies?

So I go to the rivers
and I go the trees.
I pray to the stars
and search for good omens.
I rise to protest
and sleep if I can.

I can smell the stench of their lies.

Ragnorak

Every day now is the birthday
of the end times.
This great green orb
we live on
is roasting.
Our faith in humanity wanes
as a burnt out stub
of democracy remains.
But our Mother's ruby heart still beats
as we inch to annihilation.
GAIA roars and calls
giants and chthonic monsters.
Don't worry, it's all a cycle.
At the end of destruction
the world is saved, renewed
by scraps of softness.
That's Her birthday present.

Morning

I go outside at daybreak
to kiss the ground
with my feet,
to let the photons of the sun
scrub my rods and cones.
In my tiny garden
I create a runway
for birds, butterflies,
a 101 crawling beings.
I push my fingers
into the dirt.
I hunt for moss.
Already, the daytime veil is lifting.
I know not
what tears may come today.
I will not quaver.
I will dance.

I Remember

I remember love
though the cards dealt early
were tough,
I was dense with love.
I remember love
and send it now like a signal
spiraling
to family and friends
a shallow enemy or two.
Love was all there was
when the creation's shell
cracked open.
At the end
the only rule
is that there still is love.
And I will remember.

In Between

When I pray
I go to a place in between
not a church
not a garden.
I search for cracks,
for windows and waves
for the strong siren call
of All That Is.
I bring back souvenirs,
a rock, a feather, a shell.
I show up and show out.
I ring the bell
that only I can ring.

Feast Day

Today is the Magdalene's feast day.
Peer behind patriarchy's locked door.
You will glimpse the secret of secrets.
God has a thousand feminine names.
She is hidden beneath battle skins.
Dragons guard their illusions
behind locked doors.
Here in the clearing, Great Mama churns.
Come to the fringes.
Become a cradle matriarch.
Stir the pot.
We will have a party.
Today is the Magdalene's feast day.

Allegri's Miserere

In the past my classical station
played it frequently.
But like everything else
it rises and falls.
The exquisite voices
still soar and plummet
through time and space.
I have heard it live.
I hear it in memory
ensouled in the gyri and sulci
of my brain.
My clenched fists unfurl
into praying hands.
I walk through holy fire
and touch the Mother's
burning face.
This is my mission,
this act of contrition.

Lady Liberty sends regrets,
no party this year.
Her skin flayed
her eyes haunted.
Across the river she hears
the death rattle of freedom,
the shredding of the Constitution.
Little ripples from tiny pebbles
thrown at monsters
miss their mark
again, again.
Was this on your radar?
