I don't always, but I send all my new fans 10,000 gift points--which probably doesn't mean much to you at the moment, but they are handy to have. You can buy your membership with GPs instead of cash, if that works better for you. You can buy merit badges (though you can send a free one once every 30 days). MBs are great to send to friends, to thank folks, to reward people, etc. You will sometimes see fundraisers here. You can buy things like MBs, reviews, and other things in fundraisers or you can buy a ticket to a raffle that has those things. You can also buy cNotes, like virtual cards. They are another nice thing to send people--birthdays, anniversaries, thanks, get well, etc. You can buy any of that with 10k GPs or less, except the membership. You need a good bit more, but still, 10k is a nice start.
