I got my Mother's Day call out of the way early this morning. As per usual, Mom is upset about having to work, my dad is doing nothing for her, and she's pretending Mother's Day doesn't exist because her grandmother used to make the whole day about lamenting the death of my mom's mom (breast cancer) and later, my sister would call my mom to cry about losing her kids to DCFS and make it seem like Mom's fault. It wasn't a fun phone call, but she would have been more upset if I didn't call. Darned if you do, darned if you don't - am I right? ![]() Anyway, now I can spend the rest of my day working on my next book. ![]() |

The more I talk to agents about traditional publishing, the more I think self-publishing is the way to go. I might feel differently in a few days or weeks, but I just spent some time at a Q&A with an agent and got a big dose of "do whatever the publisher says and you'll be rolling on contracts - or write the story you want but no one will ever find and read your book because you'll be nobody." I don't mind being nobody and not getting rich, but I do want people to read my books. But is it really my book if the publisher hacks it up and puts it back together differently? ![]() I don't expect anyone to know what I should or shouldn't do. I'm just thinking "out loud" in case anyone else is feeling this way. |
