         Good morning, all, and I hope it finds you well! I've a serendipitous tale to share this morning, and though it started out as an unvarnished catastrophe, I believe it's going to work out to my great advantage.
         This very morning I heard through the grapevine that my incomplete story, "Tonight Your Life Will End . . ." Open in new Window., has appeared in Jayne Author Icon's Drama Newsletter, and in fact, it has already garnered a favorable review. And why is this honor a catastrophe? Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled beyond measure when one of my humble works appears in a newsletter. This is really as close as I will ever come to professional publication, and it knocks me out, really. The catastrophe arises because that story, far from being finished, is just about to start, and here it is being promoted as a work worthy of reading. How am I supposed to fix this?
         Well, after some panicky moments, I realized that if I make Tonight a book with this story as the preface, it can then live on as a short story collection, the afterlife chronicles of one Jackson Walsh, second story man extraordinaire. This will require some shifting of port items, maybe the loss of a couple, and even the transfer of characters between stories, but right now, I see broad vistas opening up before me, and it's all thanks to a mistake, a misunderstanding of intent, and it's gonna be great. I'll leave this story as-is for the time being so that it doesn't become an Invalid Item on the first day of the newsletter, but a couple of weeks from now, look for the revamping to begin. Good Sunday morning, and I hope it finds you well. I've decided that, in order to bring a little attention to my port, I'm going to advertise weekly, or maybe biweekly. Nothing garish, just a tasteful, understated announcement of something in my port. I'm going to begin this week with a new folder I've just set up called "Invalid Item" Open in new Window.. This folder will contain unfinished works that have been demanding attention, and are very likely to see progress in the days ahead. It currently contains the following items:

"The Breakdown" Open in new Window.. This is a short story I wrote years ago with the intention of making it the opening of a series. I've never been able to find that second story until now. I'm hoping for progress soon.

"Hunter's Creed" Open in new Window., an unfinished novella about a paladin of sorts, an agent of a church he doesn't believe in seeking absolution for his crimes in company with a most amazing sidekick.

"Tonight Your Life Will End . . ." Open in new Window.. A dark supernatural story of another sort of reluctant hero. This is currently envisioned as a short story, but if things go very well, it could be the introduction to a novel.

This just got me to thinking how great it would have been to have had that career as an author.
