Livin' life large. Just goin' with the flow. It's the only way to live!
Dad Author Icon - I much prefer to take control of the flow (or at least parts of it).
Hosting a writing critique group on zoom this afternoon.
Coming up with new and imaginative ideas.
From where do you get your story ideas?

They can come from anywhere. The inspiration for my story "The VultureOpen in new Window. is an interesting story. I saw a flock of buzzards feeding on some carrion as I left work. Several days earlier, a friend told a story that he had hit a buzzard with his car, severely injuring the bird. An hour later, he drive by the spot again, and sees the bird dragging itself into the woods. He says it's because the bird didn't want to be eaten by other buzzards. The closing line immediately jumped into my mind, and I had the story outlined in my head by the time I got home, 15 minutes later.
An idea can come from anywhere. A question from someone, a song, a book. Dreams are where most of my ideas come from.

I get my story ideas by falling headlong into the great 'what if' rift.

Memories past.
There is nothing like being alone in an old house and hearing it breathe.
Why are old houses more spooky than new ones?

What I take from this is if you have a newly built house that is also haunted, you got a scarily raw deal.

Old houses have many memories . . .

I heard tell of a modern house that had strange things going on in and around it. After some investigation it was found to be built on a native American burial ground.

You had the answer the whole time. You just didn’t know it.
Have you ever reached the conclusion to a mystery and been stunned when you realized the answer was in plain sight the entire time?

Not often, but occasionally.
Occasionally, I get it right away, but a good mystery thriller leaves you guessing until the last minute and then still leaves you wondering if that is the final answer or not. this is particularly true when you are watching or reading a story featuring an "unreliable" narrator. that is the most tricky POV to master in my opinion..

I read Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" 50 years ago as a teenager. The twist at the end shocked me. Looking back at it now, it does seem less shocking.
Dramatic reveals aren’t just twists. They’re truths that change everything, so don’t ruin them with cheap tricks.
What reveal made you roll your eyes so hard you nearly sprained an eyeball?

Does that happen? *Shock* My eyeballs are problematic enough already.

Really good twists in movies I can think of

"The sixth Sense"

and

"The Village"

These are quite old movies now!
"Palpatine is still alive..."

Because of course he is. Stupid sequel trilogy.
It's not the major accomplishments in your writing life that keep you going.
Do you feel overwhelmed when you want to write? What do you do?

Constantly. There are so many decisions to be made. I just start scribbling. I love it when a story presents itself with character names and settings and all that. It's when there is just a vague that the real work begins.

Thanks for all the great replies ... and suggestions.

I don't often have issues with writing, but when I do I read stories on WDC.
I usually brainstorm and write all my thoughts down.

S 🤦 Author Icon - Holy ****! It's criminal that you can't find a job, for what my opinion is worth.

I had a friend who willingly gave up having a home for a while, to "prove to himself that he was tough enough." I never understood it, but it really wasn't my business anyhow, I reckon. In any case, he did consider it an adventure. I only mention him by way of conversation, not to make your situation seem somehow romantic. I just find it interesting how some people can be so optimistic (deluded?) that they can classify hardship as an adventure.
In real life? Oh you mean like seven months living in Shenandoah National Park? I did that with no car and only my two feet and care packages. I was working as a cashier in a gift shop by "day" and exploring during my time off. I managed to get myself lost, deadly sick and encounter about twelve black bears and live to tell about it. I only ended up in the ER twice. Neither of those times was related to bear encounters. Those were exciting times.
Bodhisattwa Parekh Author Icon - unless, like me, you're one of those individuals who lives life flying by the seat of your pants. I just dance to the music, I made plans and when those didn't turn out, improv became my safety net.
