Love this story! So appropriate today where this kind of action may well help bring back an educational system that values learning.
P.S. I had a history teacher in high school similar to Mr. Halberd. His class followed my auto-shop class and after a while, I skipped his class and extended my time in auto shop. I flunked history, but learned a lot about machines and mechanical design (I also graduated with a beautiful custom car).
Good job with the writing: nice mix of narrative and dialogue, and it felt natural, with good clarity, and if a fiction(?), still, very plausible...and thanks for jogging my memory of high school days. I'm left with a hopeful feeling for the future of eduction influenced by the students honestly seeking knowledge.
