Bard's Hall May '24 contest entry

simple justice

Line count - 19

It is not hard to be nice
to those riven, from within themself.
Do just that, she says, and it should suffice.

To Bear the Slings and Arrows is one's price
in the suffrage of ones' own self;
is it really not hard, to be, just nice?

This mortal coil, caught in Inquisitors' vise
it is so hard to be, just yourself.
But that alone ought suffice.

Lo, her son pays heed to the low guttural voice
- for the Beast of the Abyss knows only itself -
It is hard to stand apart; and still be nice.

So he says to These Others (and he says it right twice):
Be like Us! Be like Ourselves!
Do that. It must suffice.

So she gives her son this motherly advice
just worry about your-self
because it's truly not, hard to be nice
do this and it will suffice
