October 2024 Nano Prep Week 1: Protagonist Background Story

October 2024 Nano Prep Week 1: Protagonist Background Story

In the year 2096, 25 year old Steve Corona had just graduated from Mars Tech University with a Masters degree in electrical engineering. He and his mother, his sister Dianna and his nephew Shai traveled by interplanetary shuttle to the rings of Saturn, to watch a Saturn sunrise. There was a space station within the rings of Saturn where graduates were known to congregate after graduation.

From the window of the space station they could see the rings of Saturn vertically stretching over the horizon, with the sun behind them, and the planet Saturn below them. The quartet made small talk at a table where they had a good view of Saturn’s rings. There were other groups of people at other tables, mostly college graduates who were there to celebrate.

A group of space pirates burst into the room with plasma rifles. They shouted, and Steve ran toward the main wall of the room and tackled one of them, and took away his weapon. He fired at one of the pirates, wounding him on the thigh, where a wound opened up from the electrostatic field destabilizing and releasing the plasma.

There were three pirates, and one of them fired at Steve, but he was able to dodge and avoid getting hit. He fired at the pirate who shot at him, and he was also wounded in the thigh, just as the other pirate had been.

Security guards rushed in, and apprehended the pirates, it in the process, they mistakenly thought Steve was one of them and arrested him, also. Steve was initially charged with a crime, but with an automated court system, he was quickly exonerated and released later that afternoon.

When he returned to meet his family, they were thrilled that he had done something so heroic. His nephew Shai was extremely proud of his brave uncle, and their family had something to talk about for years to come.

October Nano Prep Day 12 Contest Round Antagonist Backstory

Fred Munoz was a probation officer who had caught one of the men on his caseload involved in illegal gambling. Preston Wilcox was someone who had always been in trouble with the law. He had been in and out of jail since his mid teens, and now, he had been caught orchestrating a gambling racket on Ganymede.

“I have an arrangement for you, Preston!” said Fred. “If you and your gang give me ten percent of the profits, that’s the gross, not the net after it’s divided up, then I’ll pretend this operation never happened! I’ll also make sure the police never interfere with your illegal gambling activity.”

Preston talked it over with his gang. One of them didn’t want to agree to Fred’s terms.

“Him taking 10% of something is better than us taking 100% of nothing!” said Preston. “If he helps us with this operation, the police will leave us alone!”

Preston talked them into it, and they gave Fred a disk that contained a large sum of digital currency. Fred put it into his pocket and left, just as he had promised.

Fred got into his hover car and took off into the sky. As he headed toward the sunset, he pondered his life. He lived in the year 3,333,333,332 A.D. so there should’ve been a lot of technological advancements. Some of the great inventions were lost to history, such as a device that allowed someone to alter their appearance.

Fred Munoz was born overweight and extremely unattractive, so he was jealous of men like Preston who could get girlfriends with a snap of his fingers. This is why he targeted men like him, out of jealousy. Also, because of the high population density, there were rations in place for food items. People who were fat could never eat as much as they would have liked.

Fred had to resort to stealing from his clients. He weighed 160 kilograms, which made him the fattest man on Ganymede. Fred’s boss, Judith Klak, believed any excuses Fred gave her when a client tried to tell on him. Fred knew it would be too hard for her to train someone to do his job, so she would just allow him free reign.

There were time vehicles for the extremely wealthy, and they provided the sports results for major athletic events all over the solar system. This made gambling futile. Preston’s operation involved a contained environment, and the events of that casino couldn’t be predicted, which made it lucrative. People with a gambling addiction would flock to Preston’s casino to have fun, and Fred would collect ten percent of the profits.

Fred smiled with glee as he landed in the parking garage of his favorite restaurant.

October Nano Prep Day 26 CONTEST ROUND 4: Plot Background Story

It was the summer of the year 3,333,333,332 A.D.

Petra Pomeroy was a tall 21 year old blonde woman who was cruising in her hover car over the cityscape of Ganymede to meet with a stranger who was a software expert. Petra was a harvester who acquired people who disappeared in the past and kidnapped them before they died, then miniaturized them and sold them on the black market.

The evening sky was filled with various hues of pink and lavender. She parked her vehicle in the garage and went to the stranger’s apartment.

When he came to the door, he was an older man with a long grey beard. He offered her some herbal tea, and allowed her to sit down in a comfortable chair in his living room.

“All of the most obvious potential captives have been harvested,” said Petra. “If your software can lead me to more of them, I’ll split the money with you when I sell them on the black market.”

The old man gave her a memory stick. “You haven’t been going back far enough, Petra! Back when Jupiter was the largest planet in the Sol system, before most of the hydrogen gas was siphoned off for fuel, there were people who died that were never harvested. I have spent the past 80 years searching for people who have no record of being targeted and collected.

Petra plugged the memory stick into a small device and looked it over. An image of a 30 year old man appeared on the screen. He was handsome, with brown skin, dark hair, and brown eyes.

“Steve Corona?” Petra asked. “It says he had a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He was vaporized in a nuclear fusion reactor explosion while riding a monorail on Ganymede in the year 2100. We can use someone like him! I wonder why the government hasn’t tried to resurrect this guy?”

“People in modern times have overlooked a lot of things,” the old man replied. “Who would think that someone from that far in the past could be of any use to use in this day and age? There are others on that list you can target, also.”

Petra didn’t realize that Steve Corona was the key to solving some of the most important problems facing the people living on the Jovian moons and the moons of Saturn. As soon as she rented a time vehicle, she would go back to collect him, thereby unlocking the destiny of humanity!
