Flash Fiction

Easter on Danver Street

“It has to be a trick,” Sandy said.

Raymond, sitting next to her, “How can it be a trick?”

“I don’t know… come on! Rabbits bring kids baskets of candy? In the middle of the night?!”

“Let me ask you a question, did you get one last year? Every year?”

“Well yes, I didn’t say it was fake, just a trick! I’ve never even seen a rabbit around here.”

“It comes when we’re asleep, it doesn’t want anybody to see it.”

“Well, when do we find out it’s real, like our parents seem to know?”

“I don’t know, maybe when we turn sixteen?”

“Why sixteen?”

“My brother turned sixteen last year, and, he didn’t get an Easter Basket last year!”

“Huh, a cut off age. Let’s go ask him what happened! He must know now!”

Off they went to Ray’s house. Randel was outside when they got there. “Randel!” Ray yelled, calling him over.

The questions came out quickly, both kids trying to wheedle the truth from Randel.

“Hold your horses!” he finally yelled. “What are you actually asking me?”

“Promise you won’t lie?” Sandy said first.

“I will not promise anything! You know, even if I’m too old for easter baskets I still have a lot of neat stuff at Easter! If I spoil your Easter, I won’t get all the stuff, and food, and happy fun day things!”

“What?” Sandy said sarcastically, “Are you afraid your Mom and Dad will yell at you?”

“Mom and Dad? Pffft! I’m not afraid of them.”

“What then? Why won’t you tell us?”

“I promised the Easter Bunny, like everybody else does when they turn sixteen… Oops! I don’t think I was supposed to tell you!! Don’t tell anyone!” Off he ran.

Obviously, Easter went very well on Danver Street that year.
