When a murderer hides behind a badge. 300 words

Unsolved Or Was It?

“Detective Sam Carle, Congratulations on your retirement and thanks for agreeing to this interview.”

“You’re more’n welcome Mitch.”

“First off, how many cases have you had in your thirty years as a lawman?”

“I couldn’t tell ya exact, you’ll have to git someone here to look it up fer ya,”

“According to your boss, it’s 1000.”

“That many, huh? Well, I’ll be,” Sam said with a chuckle.

“What about the Linda Slide case?”

The crime was never solved. There just wasn’t enough evidence to find who did it.”

“Then why did Josiah Miller get life for it?”

“Who told you that?” Sam roared, jumping up.

“I talked to him, he claims he was railroaded.”

“Miller done other things, some of them similar to what happened to Linda Slide. He was a natural killer, so he got put on death row.”

“What were you doing that night, the one when Linda Slide died?”

“Patrolling, like usual.”

“Did you see Linda that night?”

“I don’t recall, it’s bin awhile you know.”

“Word was you were seen with her. What happened?”

“What are you insinuatin’?”

“I saw you stop and pick up Linda that night. I followed you to Lovers Leap. I saw what you did to her!”

“What are you talkin’ about, son?”

“I saw you, but I knew no one would believe a twelve-year-old! So, I kept quiet.”

Sam lunged at the reporter as if to snap his neck. The plainclothes police grabbed him and cuffed him.

The police chief entered and read him his rights.

“Take him away, boys” he said then turned to Mitch.

“I always suspected something after his wife left him. Couldn’t prove nothing though. Thanks for the help, Mitch.”

“I guess I’ll take this tape-recording to Josiah’s lawyer and get him sprung.”
