June seeks help from her neighbor Mrs. Lumbley 500 WORDS |
Dialogue Starts With A Dilemma “Miss June Eastleigh.” “Thank you, Humphries. How good to see you June!” “And I you Mrs. Lumbley. May I sit down. It was a long walk here.” “Oh, my dear, of course! Let me order some tea and a light nuncheon.” “That would be wonderful, and I thank you.” “There I’ve rung the bell for sustenance. Now tell me, June whatever possessed you to walk from Eastleigh Manor all the way over to here. It must be furlongs out of your way. Is something wrong, my child?” “Oh, Mrs. Lumbley! I am beside myself with worry! I immediately thought of you when I heard.” “Heard what? Did someone die in an accident? Is your dear father injured? Do you need a physician? I know just the one!” “No, father is well, but he is becoming impatient for me to marry.” “As a mother I understand his thinking. You had your coming out last summer, I believe, is that not so?” “Yes, it was wonderful! But father has had no offers he’s found acceptable.” “I see, is there no one you have developed a tendresse for?” “Yes, but Father won’t hear of it!” “Has he said why?” “He thinks the man is too young for me. Why he wants me to marry someone older and what he calls more established.” “How old is the young man?” “Five years older than me.” “Oh my! Quite a stripling indeed!” “I pray you have some advice for me. I do not fear marriage, but I want us to grow together. I already have a father; I need not marry one!” “Well June, I’m sure you can work things out if you keep trying. Be honest with your father, tell him what you just told me.” “Would you speak to him? He does not seem to listen to me!” “Me? What pray tell do you think I could do? Very well, take this note to him and I will expect him tonight.” ‘Thank you so much, Mrs. Lumbley! You have my undying gratitude!” “Pish-tosh girl, it is the least I could do for the daughter of my best friend.” “Humphries, Miss June is ready to go. Have my coachman come round with landau to take her home.” “It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Lord Eastleigh. I wonder if he is as handsome as ever? Perhaps he is ready to re-wed by now. “As I recall, he was eager to marry me before Lumbley swooped down and swept me off my feet! It was a solid marriage, but far from exciting. I always wanted a daughter like June. Perhaps it’s not too late for us after all.” “Mrs. Lumbley, Lord Eastleigh!” “Your Lordship, is it time for our tete-a-tete already?” “When I received your invitation, I could not wait to see you!” “You make me blush, my lord!” “Which has always been becoming on you!” “Dismiss the servants, my love. I wish to be alone with you tonight! 500 WORDS DIALOGUE 500 6/11/2O25 |
