A Daunting Task

Story of an enormous mess

“This place is a mess, and I am done. I cannot understand how anyone can do this. Help me, please,” Plethora whispered. “No wonder my name is Plethora. I always end up in these situations.”

Her whisper became more than a whisper in the large, cavernous space. It echoed and volumed into a loud voice she could hear bouncing off the walls.
“What now?” she whispered again. “I never faced such an incredibly monumental mess. The best and only thing to do is to call Victor. He’ll know what to do.”

There was nothing here that she could identify. The era and time dates were completely invisible. She could not even tell what the round, shiny disk was supposed to do. No, Victor is her only option.

Victor flew in on the latest flying craft. It was not a flashy, top-of-the-range model, but it was still a head-turner. Victor, dressed in his usual space gear, always carried all his equipment on his back for easy access. He entered as if on a hovercraft; slow and smooth.

“Hey, Plethora, how are you today? I came as soon as I could.”
“Hi, Vic, I am fine; I hope you are too.”
“Yes, just running about helping to clean up the messes left behind by these stupid earthlings. Let’s get started. Our mission is to restore the integrity of this place.”
“Yes, Vic, please help. The devastation is disastrous and overwhelming. I don’t even know where to begin.”

The two colleagues worked throughout the day and night to find several entry points in the large room. Through the deafening silence, the only sound echoing was the soft humming of their instruments. They had to work carefully in order not to destroy the past, but to create a rearrangement of things.
