So take this lesson, be short enough

"It won't be long now," he said.
The mattress didn't quite fit in the bed
It looked odd, to his eyes
The bed regular, mattress King-Size.

He couldn't possibly make a request
To his most esteemed guest
To sleep in a bed of such length
No, that wouldn't do for the gent!

"There's just one thing, my darling
To do with this wretched thing."
Before she said 'No, dear,"
He took the garden shear

And cut the mattress in a stroke
Oh, the mess was no joke!
Feathers, feathers everywhere
But did our hero care?

"Now it's short, it isn't long"
He hummed the line like a song.
"We need to clean up a bit
And then this is a perfect fit."

But upon sweeping the stuffing
Which left them huffing and puffing
She said, "Oh my consort!
You've cut it too short!"

So it was - the bed stuck out
Our hero gave a dismayed shout.
"He's arriving in a minute
And now his feet won't fit!"

But then quick as thought
He did what he ought
Grabbing an axe, he cut the bed
"It won't be long now," he said.
