Chapter 1. The thoughts of a man getting shipped off to war. : Dear Ms. Phelps , I wanted to let you know I'm shipping off to America in 2 weeks, I'm sorry but I have to do this. Maybe you think me a fool for thinking I can make a difference in war through cannonballs and musket powder and maybe you're right. But I have to try . And it's not because I want some politician to gain the upper hand in war. No, it's because I don't want any more innocent soldiers sent off to war to die in a battle that they’ll never get to see the end of. We should go to war for fear that everything we love will be lost if we don’t. We should go to war for our loved ones, not because we were a pawn in someone else’s game. Why do I go to war ? I go to war so no more innocent families become just another number in a history book. I go to war so those innocent families don't have to start planning to move to another country because they're so afraid that the one they're in is going to get attacked. I go to war so those innocent families don’t have to. I say this to say I hope you know I’m doing this for you not because I want to gain glory. The only thing I wish to gain is for the war to end and everyone get to go back to their families and everything be back to how it was before the war. Before the ashes of war etched on to their very soul. Before the streets were plagued by malnourished sickly rats and human excrement. Before we were like starving wolves begging for the sweet release of death. The war turned good innocent people into grotesque, PTSD filled, adrenaline seeking savages who don’t care if they live to die, let alone if their friends or family make it out alive. Goodbye and I'm sorry Ms. Phelps sincerely, Micheal Shelby .
