Flash fiction.

The boy went up and plopped down next to the girl sitting by the column on the grassy hilltop.

“Excuse me, if it wouldn’t be terribly inconvenient, may I fall in love with you?” the words left his lips as quickly as he had felt them in his chest.

“Excuse me, may you love me, did I hear you ask? Would that not be up to you?” she couldn’t help but laugh.

“I thought it may, but then it no longer seemed to be. So, I wondered if there were a remote chance you might have the answer.”

“Then you do profess your love? To me. For me. Of me. At first glance?” she giggled.

“Glance? No. I believe first I loved you when I caught the scent of your perfume on the air a while back.”

“So, you’ve come up here to stalk me? I am your prey?”

“No, I pray you find me of good stock.”

“Well, you are quite cute and clever,” she said, smiling.

“Oh,” his shoulders sagged a bit, “I had hoped for handsome.”

“Don’t pout. Cute will do nicely,” she pushed his shoulder playfully.

“And clever?” he raised an eyebrow high.

“And clearly courageous. Well, does this terribly cute, clever, courageous boy have a name?”

“I’ve been called Jack all my life, but if it doesn’t suite you, feel free to pick another.”

“Oh, you’ve got it bad, haven’t you?”

“The worst. And you now?” Jack picked a dandelion and offered it to her.

“Maybe a bit,” she giggled while taking the flower, twirling it in her fingers, and giving him a teasing glance.

“And what may I call you apart from beautiful and lovely?”

“Charmed, I am sure. My name is Jill.”
